The Ottawa Canadian Football League team is an unnamed CFL franchise that has been awarded in the city of Ottawa, Ontario. On March 25, 2008, an ownership group led by Ottawa 67’s owner Jeff Hunt was awarded the franchise.

The team is expected to play at Frank Clair Stadium if the stadium can be remodelled, and would likely begin play in 2014. While the franchise was conditionally awarded the right to host the 2014 Grey Cup game in 2008, Jeff Hunt has indicated that he would like to postpone the game for a few years to give his franchise a better chance to play in the championship game and, due to lawsuits and delays, the stadium renovations will not be completed until 2014.

Hosting the Grey Cup is a condition included in the agreement giving Hunt control of the franchise.

The owners of the Ottawa CFL franchise slated to start play in 2014 are closing in on a colourful new name for the team.

Ottawa Sports and Entertainment Group partner Jeff Hunt confirmed Sunday night that the name Ottawa Red Blacks is under consideration for the club’s moniker as a reveal date approaches.

The group planned to release the team name and the identity of the first general manager in late January or early February.

The Red Blacks jives with Hunt’s past statements about the name, however. In previous media interviews, he has suggested the team’s logo would contain an ‘R’ — a throwback to the Rough Riders’ heritage — and that the team colours would include red and black.

The Fury will, in all likelihood, serve as a development academy for the NASL squad, so it would make sense for them to share the same name.

The team’s potential names have been the focus of intense debate in the city since OSEG launched a contest to come up with possibilities in early December. More than 4,000 people submitted their suggestions, which were then whittled down to the best dozen or so.
