Ottawa Fury FC, NASL expansion franchise unveils name for 2014 season

Ottawa Fury FC is now the name for the North American Soccer League (NASL) expansion team expected to start play in 2014.

More than 4,000 online submissions were made in response to a public call for suggestions, the Fury brand came out on top.

John Pugh, president of the well-established Ottawa Fury organization said that he hopes the logo options would be available for public feedback in three or four weeks, around the same time that Ottawa’s new CFL franchise is expected to announce its name.

It’s still not guaranteed that construction of the stadium that will house the NASL and CFL franchises will be completed in time for play in 2014, but Pugh said OSEG was monitoring timelines carefully.

The NASL is introducing a split schedule in 2013: April 6-July 4 and Aug. 3-Nov. 2.

The league will have nine teams in 2013, but is adding Ottawa, Indianapolis and Virginia in 2014. FC Edmonton, the other Canadian team, would also start most seasons on the road.

The NASL’s first two regular seasons also began in early April, but they ended in late September.

Pugh said the process of hiring Fury FC’s first head coach was underway. He expressed a desire to have the selection made so the coach could start scouting players during the 2013 NASL season.
