Ottawa to host Tim Hortons Brier in 2016 at TD Place
Ottawa will host the 2016 Tim Hortons Brier, the first time the city has held Canada’s premier men’s curling event since 2001.
The Canadian Curling Association has announced morning that the national men’s curling championship is returning to the capital next March 5 to 15, 15 years after it was last held here at what was then called the Ottawa Civic Centre.
TD Place arena, reopened in early October after being closed for two years, will have a capacity of about 9,800 for curling.Total attendance was 154,136, well below the all-time record of 281,985 established in 2005 at Edmonton’s Rexall Place, where capacity was 16,839, but also far above the 65,505 that attended last year’s Tim Hortons Brier at 5,500-seat Interior Savings Centre in Kamloops, B.C. The next Brier is set for the 17,000-seat Saddledome in Calgary between Feb. 28 and March 7.
The 12-team tournament features 11 provincial and territorial teams as well as the reigning Team Canada champion.
It’s the first time the city has hosted the tournament since Alberta’s Randy Ferbey won in 2001 in the same building, then named the Ottawa Civic Centre.
Ottawa seeking to host more events
Since 2011 Ottawa mayor Jim Watson has made hosting more big events, including sporting events, a priority for the city’s tourism industry, adopting what he calls a “bid more, win more, host more” strategy.

The city hosted the 2012 NHL All-Star game and is one of six host cities for the FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2015.
The mayor had earlier this year met with NHL commissioner Gary Bettman about his desire for Canada’s capital to host an outdoor classic at TD Place, coinciding with Canada’s 150th birthday celebration. Watson has also expressed a desire to have Ottawa host the Grey Cup in 2017.
TD Place stadium, the 24,000-seat home of the Ottawa Redblacks of the CFL and Ottawa Fury FC of the North American Soccer League, is to be the site of an outdoor concert by One Direction next September, just days after that boy band plays an indoor show at 19,500-seat Canadian Tire Centre in the city’s west end.
As well, nine games of the 2015 Women’s World Cup of soccer will played at the stadium between June 7 and June 26.

I was there with my family for the skate today, we had lots of fun whoever the place is a bit “dry” in the rink area. There is no music and there is no decoration light. We can make this place magic by puting decoration light on all the trees that are surrounding the rink(unique color instead of multi) and music like what we have at the city hall.
