Ottawa’s CFL Team will be called the RedBlacks

Ottawa CFL franchise announced Saturday afternoon, the Ottawa RedBlacks will be team’s nickname and the league’s newest football franchise.

Ottawa’s third CFL franchise unveiled the new name at an event for season’s ticket holders at the Ernst and Young Centre after months of speculation and a leak of the name and logo in late May. And while the general reaction was positive, ownership knows there are those who will need convincing to embrace it.

The RedBlacks are expected to begin playing at Frank Clair Stadium in the summer of 2014 after construction should be completed at the redeveloped Lansdowne Park. Lansdowne Park is undergoing a multi-million dollar renovation that will include the new stadium as well as commercial and residential development. Construction is on schedule and all signs point to the stadium being ready for kickoff in late June of 2014.

CFL commissioner Mark Cohon and about 3,000 others were on hand for the announcement, made by owner Jeff Hunt representing the Ottawa Sports and Entertainment Group.

Former Ottawa CFL player Russ Jackson and Tony Gabriel made the announcement on stage and said the name comes from Ottawa’s history as a lumber town as well as the sports colours associated with the city.

The ceremony included cheerleaders, a marching band, minor football players and a large amount of Ottawa CFL alumni, CFL commissioner Mark Cohon, Ottawa GM Marcel Desjardins and Ottawa mayor Jim Watson.

Following the logo announcement, two of the most famous figures in Ottawa CFL history took the stage: Canadian quarterback Russ Jackson and Canadian tight end Tony Gabriel. Jackson played for the Rough Riders from 1958 to 1969, winning three Grey Cups along the way, while Gabriel starred with them from 1975 to 1981 and famously made “The Catch” off a late Tom Clements pass to win the 1976 Grey Cup:

Gabriel mentioned the link between the RedBlacks name and rugby, which of course played a pivotal role in the founding of Canadian football, and he discussed how thrilled he is to see Ottawa back in the CFL.

Ottawa has been without a CFL team since the short-lived Renegades folded in 2006. Before that, the city had the more accomplished Rough Riders.

After much deliberation the Ottawa ownership group felt the RedBlacks would give them the best opportunity to tie into Ottawa’s rich football history.

The official schedule for the Red Blacks will kickoff in the summer of 2014. There are currently 350 workers working at Lansdowne park to make sure the project is finished in time for next season.
