Tender issued for new 18-acre urban park at Lansdowne Park
The City of Ottawa has issued a tender to construct a new 18-acre urban park at the new Lansdowne redevelopment and four contractors have received the final tendering package after a pre-qualification process.
The park will include a children’s play area with a state-of-the art play and climbing structure; a rubberized surface and a beginners’ skateboard park; small and large stages; refurbished green space around the Aberdeen Pavilion, including an extensive seating court; a heritage orchard and civic gardens; and a permanent farmers’ market space.
A water feature will re-use water for irrigation in the park.
The park will also include a refrigerated ice rink, which can be converted for curling and used as a basketball courts in the summer.
The Great Lawn, an open green space about the same size as Parliament Hill’s front lawn, with have walking paths, seating areas and event spaces.

The restored Horticulture Building, featuring community space, will serve as the backdrop to the park. Renovation of the relocated 100-year-old building will begin this summer, and when complete, the building, along with the Aberdeen Pavilion, will serve as a heritage gateway from the Rideau Canal to the rest of the site. Other heritage elements will be incorporated in consultation with the Algonquins of Ontario.
The successful contractor is expected to begin construction of the urban park in early July.
The procurement process is being overseen by the city’s Chief Procurement Officer to ensure that it conforms to the city’s purchasing by-law.
