The design watchdog on the Lansdowne Park redevelopment is impressed by the progression of the drawings since the original concepts were unveiled.
George Dark, who chairs an expert design advisory panel, said Phillips Farevaag Smallenberg, the Vancouver−based firm working on the urban park, has been rejigging the concept to fit various recommendations. “I think it’s coming together extremely well,” Dark said Thursday. “They’re really making it fit the site, fit the area, and to my eye it’s getting better.”
Dark said Phillips Farevaag Smallenberg haven’t been deterred by requests to remove some elements from its original drawing. For example, the city asked the designer to remove an elaborate bridge over the Rideau Canal.
‘STRONG IDEAS’
“There were a lot of strong ideas in the entry for the competition and it’s hard sometimes to hold on to those,” Dark said.
“I’m amazed at the number (the designer) has been able to re−engage back into the plan. The public art is continuing to evolve itself. The large lawn is now very much embedded with the stadium.”

The stadium, retail, office and residential space is being designed by a trio of professionals hired by the Ottawa Sports and Entertainment Group. They are Ritchard Brisbin, Barry Hobin and Robert Claiborne.
Dark said the park design has welcomed depth. There are hills where people will be able to look into the stadium or look at the canal.
“I think it’s very imaginative. It has topography and I think that’s the most interesting thing,” Dark said.
City council will be asked to approve a complete site plan Nov. 24.
